If you think about it, there were two types of Country during the "golden age", the sweetened polished Nashville records that featured strings and backing vocal groups and the straight Honky Tonk Country records. Country Christmas albums could be separated in much the same way. Last year, we got a gem of the polished Nashville variety from Mandy Barnett. David Ball has delivered one of the straight up Country kind in "The Greatest Christmas". I don't have the background in Country I should have, so I don't have the artist comparisons that would be helpful for you. But take a listen to the mid-tempo Country Waltz on the title track, the Hillbilly Country of "It's Christmas Time In The Blueridge Mountains", and the bluesy Honky Tonk of "Santa Send Some Texas" and tell me you don't want this album in your library. The last two tracks don't appear to be Christmas tracks ("Riding With Private Malone" was a #2 hit for Ball in 2001 and the original "Thinkin' Problem" was his very first hit in 1994), but they're real good songs and, given the rest of the high quality holiday music here, I don't mind in the least.
Hard copy CDs are on the way, as is an all new web site for Mr. Ball. In the meantime, check the song samples at Amazon and stop by David's Facebook page. At nearly 60 years of age, it sounds like David Ball still has a lot of tread left on those tires and a lot of tunes left in his guitar.
